*Intervista del 27 novembre 2020<\/p>\n
Proprio nei giorni in cui il Bod\u00f8\/Glimt ha festeggiato il primo titolo della sua storia, ho avuto il piacere di discutere con Alfons Sampsted<\/strong>, uno dei grandi artefici di questa impresa. Sempre presente sulla fascia destra, ha completato il suo perfetto 2020 qualificandosi con la sua Islanda U21 agli Europei di categoria. Simpatico, determinato e ambizioso, ecco cosa mi ha raccontato durante la nostra chiacchierata!<\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Ciao Alfons! Il tuo 2020 \u00e8 assolutamente incredibile ma partiamo dall’inizio della tua carriera. Nato a K\u00f3pavogur, sei cresciuto nel Brei\u00f0ablik, il club della tua citt\u00e0. Quello del Brei\u00f0ablik \u00e8 il miglior settore giovanile islandese. Secondo te, quali sono le ragioni del successo di questa accademia? Quali sono i tuoi ricordi pi\u00f9 belli di quel periodo?<\/p>\n AS: Ciao! Sono tanti i fattori che fanno del Brei\u00f0ablik un ottimo club in cui crescere ma principalmente penso che sia perch\u00e9 ci sono coach ben istruiti e ambiziosi che sono bravi a formare e sviluppare i giovani calciatori. Ho tanti ricordi, abbiamo vinto il campionato giovanile nazionale un paio di volte e vinto anche il campionato nazionale indoor quando ero ragazzino. Quando mi guardo indietro, vedo a che punto fosse divertente andare all’allenamento con i miei migliori amici e semplicemente giocare a calcio.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Hai lasciato l’Islanda per la Svezia. Sei stato al Norrk\u00f6ping, al Landskrona ed al Sylvia quindi hai conosciuto i tre principali livelli del Calcio svedese. Cosa hai trovato di diverso tra il Calcio svedese e quello islandese? \u00c8 stato difficile lasciare casa e vivere all’estero cos\u00ec giovane?<\/p>\n AS: Credo che le leghe svedesi siano complessivamente migliori di quelle islandesi soprattutto perch\u00e9 le squadre svedesi sono migliori nel possesso palla. Per quanto riguarda il trasferimento, non \u00e8 stato difficile perch\u00e9 gi\u00e0 prima giocavo al \u00de\u00f3r di Akureyri quindi avevo gi\u00e0 lasciato casa da ragazzino seppur restando in Islanda. Quell’esperienza mi ha insegnato molto quindi quando sono partito per la Svezia, sapevo gi\u00e0 cosa aspettarmi.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Dopo queste esperienze, sei arrivato nel posto che sembra perfetto per te, il Bod\u00f8\/Glimt. Il gioco \u00e8 dinamico, aggressivo e ha appassionato tantissime persone. Prima di firmare cosa ti ha convinto a scegliere il Glimt? Ritenevi gi\u00e0 possibile vincere il campionato?<\/p>\n AS: Avevo chiesto informazioni ad un mio ex compagno di squadra, Oliver Sigurj\u00f3nsson, che aveva giocato al Bod\u00f8\/Glimt e mi ha parlato molto bene di loro e mi ha detto oltretutto che il loro stile di gioco sarebbe stato ideale per me. Sinceramente quando sono arrivato non credevo che avremmo potuto vincere il titolo ma mi sono reso conto davvero rapidamente che avevamo le capacit\u00e0 per farlo.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Tutte le volte che mi \u00e8 capitato di parlare con un calciatore islandese, mi ha sempre fatto capire l’importanza del gruppo, della famiglia e del fatto di rappresentare le persone. Questo \u00e8 un titolo storico per il Nord-Norge e ti permette di entrare nella leggenda di questo club ma anche in quella di questa regione. I fan ma pi\u00f9 in generale gli abitanti di Bod\u00f8, ti hanno fatto sentire questa energia? Avete compreso la dimensione di quello che avete realizzato?<\/p>\n AS: Si, l’atmosfera in citt\u00e0 quando siamo tornati oggi da Drammen era davvero speciale, lo spirito di Bod\u00f8 risplendeva e mi sono sentito come a casa. Quando parlo con gli anziani legati al club e mi dicono a che punto questo significhi cosi tanto per loro, mi rendo conto che abbiamo un grande impatto sulle persone.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Questo successo \u00e8 un capolavoro. Avete giocato davvero bene, segnato tantissimo e regalato grandi emozioni. Parlando di grandi emozioni, ti andrebbe di raccontarci come hai vissuto la sfida contro il Milan? Avete affrontato uno dei club pi\u00f9 prestigiosi della storia a testa alta e senza paura. Che ricordi hai di questa “esperienza italiana”?<\/p>\n AS: \u00c8 stata un’esperienza molto divertente. \u00c8 bastato arrivare a San Siro per renderci conto della storia di questo club e di chi stavamo per affrontare. Se guardiamo la partita, complessivamente penso che abbiamo giocato una buona partita contro il Milan e che possiamo mantenere la testa alta anche dopo la partita. \u00c8 difficile scegliere un singolo ricordo di questa esperienza ma mi ricordo quanto mi sono sentito grato e orgoglioso mentre lottavo sul terreno di gioco contro una delle migliori squadre al mondo.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Se escludiamo la partita contro il Molde e la sostituzione contro l’Aalesund a due minuti dal termine, hai disputato ogni singolo minuto di questa stagione. Basta vederti giocare per rendersi conto che sei un ottimo atleta. In passato hai praticato altri sport?<\/p>\n AS: Esatto, sfortunatamente ho saltato la partita contro il Molde a causa della quarantena per il Covid ma va bene cos\u00ec. In ogni caso si, ho praticato atletica leggera e ginnastica. Mio fratello maggiore \u00e8 coach di atletica leggera quindi ogni volta che torno a casa in Islanda, mi alleno con lui due volte a settimana negli sprint, nel salto in lungo e anche nel salto in alto. Mi piace davvero molto!<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Quando pensiamo a te, pensiamo alla Nazionale U21. Oltre ad essere un leader di questa selezione, sei il calciatore con il maggior numero di presenze nella storia. Cosa significa per te vestire la maglia della Nazionale?<\/p>\n AS: Giocare per l’Islanda \u00e8 sempre stato un sogno ma anche un obiettivo per me sin da quando ero piccolo. Avere la possibilit\u00e0 di giocare in maglia blu, a qualsiasi et\u00e0 \u00e8 davvero un onore. Sono sempre pronto a dare tutto per il mio Paese.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> In un gruppo complesso, con selezioni importanti come Italia, Svezia e Irlanda siete riusciti a qualificarvi per i prossimi Europei di categoria! Un traguardo incredibile che era riuscito solo nel 2011 grazie alla generazione che ha poi rappresentato l’Islanda ad Euro 2016 ed ai Mondiali 2018. Dopo che partita hai capito che questa qualificazione era possibile?<\/p>\n AS: L’ho capito quando siamo tornati subito in gioco dopo la durissima sfida contro la Svezia, battendo con una grande performance l’Irlanda in casa nostra. Il carattere della squadra \u00e8 stato incredibile, siamo passati da una sconfitta per 5-0 contro la Svezia allo sconfiggere l’Irlanda due giorni dopo. In quel momento ho capito che avevamo davvero tutto per provarci fino alla fine.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Cosa significa per te da giocatore chiave, guidare questi ragazzi?<\/p>\n AS: Significa tanto ma \u00e8 la squadra la nostra vera forza. Cerco di dare a questi ragazzi fiducia ed energia per giocare la loro migliore partita possibile ma anche loro mi aiutano tanto, facendomi sentire sicuro nel nostro stile di gioco.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Capisco perfettamente cosa intendi, vi seguo cosi tanto che ho pure esultato al gol di Willumsson contro l’Italia.<\/p>\n AS: (ride, ndr). Anch’io ero davvero felice quando Willumsson ha segnato, siamo migliori amici sin da quando avevamo 4 anni.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Nel tuo fantastico 2020 sei stato anche convocato in Nazionale maggiore ed hai esordito. In questo delicato momento per la Nazionale, in cui il cambio generazionale sembra davvero vicino, ti senti gi\u00e0 pronto a prendere il posto di una leggenda come S\u00e6varsson?<\/p>\n AS: Si, ho avuto una piccola parte nel team quest’anno e mi sento pronto per un ruolo pi\u00f9 importante nel prossimo futuro. Non sta a me decidere chi gioca quindi sar\u00f2 sempre concentrato per essere pronto quando la chiamata arriver\u00e0.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Con le Nazionali giovanili e con i club, hai affrontato grandissimi calciatori. Quale pensi che ti abbia messo pi\u00f9 in difficolt\u00e0? Chi ti piacerebbe affrontare in futuro?<\/p>\n AS: Ho giocato contro ottimi calciatori ma quelli che mi hanno messo pi\u00f9 in difficolt\u00e0 sono stati probabilmente Jack Grealish e Mikel Oyarzabal. I giocatori che mi piacerebbe affrontare invece sono Neymar, H\u00e5land e Mbapp\u00e9.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Guardandoti giocare lotti dal primo fino all’ultimo minuto, il tutto offrendo anche un gioco di buona qualit\u00e0. Quali credi che siano i tuoi punti di forza?<\/p>\n AS: Credo di essere un all around player ma l’uno contro uno difensivo \u00e8 una delle mie forze. Cosi come quando si costruisce gioco o si deve supportare la manovra offensiva.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> In questo momento suppongo che tu voglia provare a raggiungere la fase a gironi della Champions League con il Bod\u00f8\/Glimt ma in futuro in quale campionato ti piacerebbe giocare? Perch\u00e9 proprio in quello?<\/p>\n AS: Mmmh, sono sempre stato interessato alla Bundesliga. Mi piace il loro modo potente e semplice di giocare un calcio offensivo.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> E per caso segui anche il Calcio italiano? Tifi per una squadra? C’\u00e8 un calciatore italiano che ammiri in modo particolare?<\/p>\n AS: Ho seguito poco il Calcio italiano negli ultimi anni ma adesso molto di pi\u00f9 visto che il mio amico Baldursson ha iniziato ad avere minutaggio al Bologna e che Jens Petter Hauge si \u00e8 trasferito al Milan. In ogni caso sono sempre stato tifoso del Napoli, sono anche andato a Napoli per vederli giocare quando ero piccolo e mi piacevano davvero tanto. Per quanto riguarda il mio giocatore italiano preferito, Di Natale era sicuramente uno dei miei preferiti quando ero ragazzino quindi devo dire lui.<\/strong><\/p>\n ICN:<\/strong> Ti faccio un’ultima domanda. Una volta mi chiesero perch\u00e9 il tuo cognome non finisce per “son”. Risposi semplicemente che quando i cognomi hanno radici straniere come nel caso di Gu\u00f0johnsen e Schram, il cognome non cambia. Sapresti dirmi di che origine \u00e8 il tuo cognome?<\/p>\n AS: I miei antenati dalla parte di mio padre sono di origini inglesi. Lui incontr\u00f2 una donna islandese e quindi i figli hanno mantenuto il cognome. Originariamente per\u00f2 il cognome era Sumpsted ma da qualche parte lungo la strada, le lettere sono state mischiate ed \u00e8 cambiato in Sampsted. Sinceramente mi piace molto il mio cognome!<\/strong><\/p>\n Finisce con questo curioso aneddoto l’intervista ad Alfons Sampsted che ringrazio tantissimo per la sua gentilezza e per aver preso il tempo per rispondere in un periodo cosi pieno di impegni come questo. L’augurio oltre che di poterlo incontrare per congratularmi di persona, \u00e8 soprattutto quello di poter riuscire a realizzare tutti i suoi sogni e le sue ambizioni il pi\u00f9 presto possibile!<\/p>\n ICN: Hi Alfons! Your 2020 is absolutely amazing but let’s start from the beginning of your career. Born in K\u00f3pavogur, you grew up at Brei\u00f0ablik, the club in your city. Brei\u00f0ablik is Iceland’s best youth sector. In your opinion, what are the reasons for the success of this academy? What are your best memories there?<\/p>\n AS: There are a lot of things that make Brei\u00f0ablik a good club to grow up in. But mainly I think is consists of well educated and ambitious coaches who are good at shaping and developing young players. I have some memories, winning the youth national leagues a couple of times, winning the national indoor championship when I was young. When I look back I see how fun it was to show up to training with your best friends and just play football.<\/p>\n ICN: You left Iceland for Sweden. You have been in Norrk\u00f6ping, Landskrona and Sylvia, so playing in all 3 levels of Swedish Football. What do you find different in Swedish football compared to Icelandic football? Was it difficult to leave home so young and live abroad?<\/p>\n AS: I think the swedish league is overall better than the Icelandic one, and fela like teams in Sweden are better at ball possession. No I did not think so, I was in \u00de\u00f3r in Akureyri when i was younger, then i moved from home but was still in Iceland, I learned a lot from that. So when I moved to Sweden I kind of knew what to expect.<\/p>\n ICN: After all these experiences, you arrive at the place that seems perfect for you, Bod\u00f8\/Glimt. The game of Bod\u00f8-Glimt is dynamic, aggressive and has thrilled many people. Before signing, what convinced you to choose Glimt? Were you already thinking about the possibility of winning the title?<\/p>\n AS: I spoke to a former teammate of mine, Oliver Sigurjonsson, who was playing with Bod\u00f8\/Glimt, and he spoke highly of them and told me their style of play would suit me. But my first thought was maybe not that we would win the title, but very soon I realised that we had the capacity to do well.<\/p>\n ICN: Every time I interviewed an Icelandic footballer, he made me understand the importance of the group, of the family, of representing his people. This is a historical title for Nord-Norge and allows you to enter the legend of this club as well as this region. Did the fans but more generally all the inhabitants of Bod\u00f8 make you feel this energy? Do you realize what you are doing?<\/p>\n AS: Yes, the atmosphere in the town when we came home today was something else, the spirit in Bod\u00f8 really shined, felt so much at home. When I talk to the older men around the club and they tell me how much this means to them I realise what an impact we are having on the people.<\/p>\n ICN: This success is a masterpiece. Play very well, score a lot and give great emotions. Speaking of great emotions, would you like to tell us how you experienced the match against Milan? You have faced one of the greatest clubs in history, head held high and without fear. What memories do you have of that Italian experience?<\/p>\n AS: It was a really fun experience, just arriving at san siro made you realise the history of the club and what we were up against. But overall I think we made a good performance against Milan and are allowed to keep our head high after the game. It\u2019s hard choosing an exact moment that is the most memorable from the game, but I remember how proud and thankful I felt when walking on the pitch going to play one of the best teams in the world.<\/p>\n ICN: If we exclude the match against Molde and the 88-minute substitution against Aalesund, you have played every single minute of this season. Just watching you play, to realize that you are a great athlete. Did you always play football or did you also play other sports as a kid? If so, do you still practice them in your free time?<\/p>\n AS: Yes it was unfortunate to miss the Molde game due to quarantine, but it is what it is. But yeah I was in track and field and gymnastics when I was younger, and my older brother is a track and field coach, so every time I am home in Iceland I train with him a couple time a week, both sprinting and long and high jump. I really enjoy it.<\/p>\n ICN: When we think of you, however, we think of the U21 national team. You are a real leader as well as the player with the most appearances in history. What does wearing the national team shirt represent for you?<\/p>\n AS: It\u2019s been a goal and a dream of mine playing for Iceland since I was young. And being able to play in the blue jersey at any age level has been an honour. Always ready to give my best for my country.<\/p>\n ICN: In a difficult group with important teams such as Italy, Sweden and Ireland, you managed to qualify for the next European Championship! Incredible achievement that was only achieved in 2011 by the generation that then represented Iceland at Euro 2016 and Russia 2018. After which match did you understand that you would be able to triumph? What does it mean to you as a leader to lead these guys?<\/p>\n AS: When we bounced back after a tough game against Sweden, with a strong performance against Ireland at home. The character in the team was amazing, going from a 5-0 loss to beating Ireland 2 days later made me realise that we might have what it takes to go all the way. It means a lot, but it is the team that is our strength, I just try to give the guys confidence and energy to play their best game. And they also help me a lot, make me feel secure in our style of play.<\/p>\n ICN: I understand perfectly. I follow you so much that I even celebrated Willumsson’s goal against Italy haha<\/p>\n AS: Haha yeah me too, felt extra good when willumsson scored, me and him have been best friends since we were like 4 years old.<\/p>\n ICN: In your fantastic 2020 you have also been called up with the senior national team and made your debut. This is a delicate moment for the national team, there could soon be a generational change. Do you already feel ready to take the place of a legend like Saevarsson?<\/p>\n AS: But yeah, I have been a small part of the team this year, and I feel ready for a bigger role in the near future. But it is not me who chooses who plays, so I will focus on being ready when the call comes.<\/p>\n ICN: Watching your games you fight from the first to the last minute but also offer a good quality game. What do you think are your strengths?<\/p>\n AS: I think I am an all around player, but defensive 1v1 is a strength of mine as well as good in build up play and adding extra attacking load.<\/p>\n ICN: With the national team and clubs you have faced very strong players. Which one do you think put you in the most trouble? Which one would you like to face in the future?<\/p>\n AS: I have played agains very good players, but the one that was the most difficult was probably Jack Grealish or Mikel Oyarzabal. A player I would like to play against is Neymar, H\u00e5land or Mbappe.<\/p>\n ICN: At the moment I imagine you will try to qualify for the Champions League group stage with Bod\u00f8-Glimt but in your future which league would you like to play in? Why exactly in that?<\/p>\n AS: Umm I have always been interested in the German league, i like their powerful no nonesense forward playing football.<\/p>\n ICN: Do you follow Italian football? Do you like a particular team? Is there an Italian player (from the present or from the past) that you admire in a particular way?<\/p>\n AS: Umm i have followed italian Football sporadically through the years, but more now after my friend Baldursson started getting minutes for Bologna and when Jens Petter Hauge moved from us to AC Milan. But I have always been a Napoli fan, I went to Napoli to see them play when I was little, and I really liked them. As for a favourite player, Di Natale was one of my favourite players when I was young, so I must give him a shout.<\/p>\n ICN: Some guys have asked me why your surname doesn’t end in “son”. I tell them: Often when they have foreign roots like Gu\u00f0johnsen or Schram the surname does not change. So, what origins does your last name have?<\/p>\n AS: My ancestors on my fathers side are originally from England, he met an Icelandic woman and they had kids that carried the name onwards. Originally it was Sumpster but somewhere along the way the letters got mixed up and it changed to Sampsted. I really like my name to be honest.<\/p>\n The interview with Alfons Sampsted ends with this curious anecdote!
